ByeDPI not working? Diagnose by the shape of the failure

"It doesn't work" is three different problems wearing one coat. Each fails in a recognisable way, and each has a different fix — so stop changing settings at random and look at how it fails first.

Last updated: November 3, 2026 · Checked against the official ByeDPI documentation and GitHub repositories.

Illustration for the ByeDPI not working guide: a broken chain link beside a warning sign, the two places most connection failures come from
Most ByeDPI failures are one broken link: the proxy not running, the browser not pointed at it, or a strategy the network has learned to spot.

Failure shape 1: nothing loads at all — not even Google

This is almost never a bypass problem. It is a plumbing problem. If every site dies the moment ByeDPI starts, your browser is talking to a proxy that is not there, or not where it thinks. Check, in this order: is ByeDPI actually running (on desktop, its window or process must stay alive; on Android, the app must show as started)? Is the proxy type SOCKS5 — not HTTP — with host 127.0.0.1 and port 1080, as in our SOCKS proxy setup guide? Is something else already using port 1080? The tell-tale confirmation: turn the proxy setting off and everything instantly works again. Fix the plumbing before reading further; no desync method survives being sent to the wrong port.

Failure shape 2: unblocked sites work, the blocked one still refuses

Now ByeDPI is running and routed correctly, but your provider's filter is winning. This is the normal, expected hard case — the defaults simply do not match this particular DPI. Do not conclude the tool is broken. Climb the ladder in the best settings guide: move the split position inside the SNI first, then change the lead method, then try fake-based combinations. One change at a time, one test site, notes as you go. On Android the same applies inside the app's Settings; the strategy that unlocks one provider frequently differs from the one a friend swears by on another network, because the filters differ, not because one of you is doing it wrong.

Failure shape 3: it worked yesterday, or works on one network only

Worked yesterday and dead today, with no change on your side, usually means the provider changed theirs. Filters are updated precisely because tools like this exist. First move: update ByeDPI itself from the official download page — methods are maintained in response to filter changes, and an old build is fighting last season's battle. Then re-run the settings ladder quickly; often a neighbouring position works. Works on mobile data but not home broadband (or the reverse) is the same story told by two different filters: save per-network notes rather than searching for one universal command.

The case nobody wants to hear: it may not be DPI at all

If a site fails identically with ByeDPI on, off, tweaked and updated — and fails on other networks too — consider that the block is not Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) at all. If the provider blocks the destination IP address, desync has nothing to desync; the packets are simply not routed. If the service itself rejects your country, that decision is made by the service, after a perfectly successful connection. ByeDPI cannot help in either case, and we say so plainly in our ByeDPI review because pretending otherwise wastes your evening. Those cases are what an actual VPN is for.

Still stuck? Ask properly, and get a useful answer

The project's GitHub is where the developers and experienced users actually are. A report that says "not working, help" gets nothing; a report that names your platform, your provider, the exact command or app settings you tried, and which failure shape above you see, gets answers. Our support page links the right GitHub places for the core and the Android app, and the FAQ covers the quick questions — including whether ByeDPI hides your IP (it does not) and whether Android needs root (it does not). Before posting anywhere, also confirm your copy came from the official source: a startling share of "broken ByeDPI" installs turn out to be unofficial repacks, which is why the download page is so blunt about fakes.

The ten-minute reset: stop diagnosing and start clean

There is a point — usually about forty minutes into random setting changes — where further diagnosis on a dirty setup is worthless, because you no longer know which of your changes is doing what. At that point, run the reset protocol instead. It takes ten minutes and it converts a fog into one of the three failure shapes above.

  1. Back to baseline. Stop ByeDPI completely and remove the proxy setting (or, on Android, stop the app). Confirm ordinary browsing works. If it does not, the problem was never ByeDPI — fix your connection first.
  2. Update before anything clever. Install the latest release from the official source. Old builds fight old filters.
  3. Defaults only. Start ByeDPI exactly as documented, with no remembered tweaks, and test one known-blocked site and one ordinary site.
  4. Change networks, not settings. Run the identical setup through a phone hotspot or a second connection. If it works there, your provider's filter is the variable, and the settings ladder is the answer. If it fails identically everywhere, suspect the site or an IP-level block.
  5. One rung, one note. Only now climb the settings ladder, one change at a time, writing down what each rung did.
What the reset showsWhat it means
Baseline (step 1) is already brokenYour connection or device has a problem ByeDPI is innocent of.
Works on hotspot, fails at homeTwo different filters. Save per-network settings; no universal command exists.
Defaults fail, a ladder rung worksYour filter reassembles more carefully than average. Keep the working rung, scoped.
Nothing works anywhere, site down for everyoneNot DPI. Check the site itself — and if it is geo-blocking you, that is VPN territory.

Solved it? Don't stop here

While things work, read the ByeDPI, GoodbyeDPI and ByeByeDPI comparison — half the 'broken' installs we hear about were simply the wrong project in the first place — and using ByeDPI with AdGuard on Android, if your setup involves a second app fighting ByeDPI for Android's single VPN slot. Both are in the ByeDPI guides hub. Starting from zero instead? the official ByeDPI download page plus the step-by-step ByeDPI installation guide. Anything this guide could not fix goes through the ByeDPI support page; the one-line answers are in the ByeDPI FAQ.
